Pakistan: Operation in Swat Over!!!

Pakistani forces have wrapped up their operation in the Swat Valley and Buner, and the areas have been cleared of militants, the Pakistani Army claims.

Military Spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said the operation in Swat and two other northwestern districts were almost over.

During a joint press conference with Federal Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira held on Wednesday, the Military Spokesman said Maulana Fazlullah, a local Taliban leader was injured.

Abbas added that Fazlullah was wounded during an air strike in Swat on Monday, giving no further information about the cleric’s condition.

The army claims that about 1,600 militants have been killed during the operation.

The government has vowed to open up a second front against the militant commander Baitullah Mehsud, who is hiding in the tribal areas along the Afghan border.

The Pakistani officials said that they have discussed the issue of the internally displaced persons during their meeting with the Army Chief Ashfaq Pervaiz (Pervez) Kayani.

The Information Minister said a roadmap for the return of the internally displaced people would be announced within the next few days.

According to the UN and Pakistani officials, more than two million people have been displaced due to the fighting between the alleged Taliban militants and the security forces in northwestern Pakistan.
